5 Unique Stores in the Water Street District
The historic Water Street District in downtown Henderson, Nevada, is the cultural heart of the city, providing opportunities for education, employment, nightlife, and community gathering. Of course, it’s also a bastion of small-business activity. Here, you can find such a variety of nifty shops run by passionate, interesting people that every visit can seem like a new experience. To serve as a sort of guide to the area, we’ve put together this list of what we think are six of the most unique stores in the Water Street District.
Downtown Vintage Barbershop & Shave Parlor
The Downtown Vintage Barbershop & Shave Parlor transports you to another time, when barbers wore white smocks and honed straight razors on strops. Just looking at the storefront, with its vivid but muted barber-pole colors, you can tell there’s something classic about this place. Go inside and you’ll find that owner Jorge Reyes has somehow managed to synthesize the best of the past and the present to create a friendly hometown-style barbershop, where the environment is warm, the conversation is lively, and you don’t mind waiting for your turn.
Address: 37 S. Water St., Henderson, NV 89015.
Hours of Operation: The Downtown Vintage Barbershop & Shave Parlor is open Tuesday through Saturday. Hours are from 9 a.m–5 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m.–4 p.m. on Saturdays.
Contact: Reach the establishment by phone at 702-564-2343 or via social media.
City Lights Art Gallery
Artists Susan LaBuda and Dotty Fenner started City Lights Art Gallery to promote local art and to support art education in Henderson. Here, both artists, art enthusiasts, and passersby can convene, learn, and build a stronger appreciation for the multiple facets of art — development, creation, marketing, and more.
Part of what distinguishes City Lights Art Gallery from other purveyors of fine art is that it’s also a non-profit 501(c)3 corporation and cooperative of more than 100 members. Thus, the purpose of the gallery is primarily charitable. It plays a vital role in assisting art education at community centers, funding art education, promoting the work of member artists, teaching aspiring artists how to promote and sell their art, providing art instruction, and awarding scholarships to college-bound high schoolers.
Address: 3 E. Army St., Henderson, NV 89015.
Hours of Operation: The gallery is open from noon to 4 p.m. on Wednesday through Sunday.
Contact: Call City Lights Gallery at 702-260-0300 or email [email protected].
Happy Earth Market
As the business itself says, Happy Earth Market is a “creative community space,” and that rings true in a multitude of ways. For one thing, just about everything in the store — the merchandise, the art adorning the walls, the furniture — comes from the Henderson community. For another, all community members are welcome to use the space for just about anything, whether it’s creating art, working remotely, or just enjoying leisure activities.
Of course, there’s a tremendous number of locally sourced goods to buy, too. Because many of the items are handmade, they also tend to be one-of-a-kind. Moreover, Happy Earth Market happily hosts a variety of events, such as self-care sessions, knitting and crocheting groups, women’s circles, and open mics. Check the calendar regularly to find something that interests you.
Address: 35a E. Basic Road, Henderson, NV 89015.
Hours of Operation: Happy Earth Market is open six days a week, Monday through Saturday. The store opens at noon and closes at 5 p.m.
Contact: To reach the store by phone, call 702-757-1556. You can also contact the establishment by email at [email protected] or via the contact page on its website.
Chinitas Tapas & Sushi
Chanthy Walsh had already had two successful restaurant ventures before she started Chinitas Tapas & Sushi: Tokyo Social House (Japanese cuisine) and Sonrisa Grill (Mexican cuisine). So the logical next step was to combine elements from both to create a novel fusion of Asian and Mexican flavors.
The menu at Chinitas features a wealth of inventive fusion plates. Among the unique taco fillings are Korean short rib, bulgogi, and General Tso chicken, while the Sharables options include such creations as birria ramen, egg rolls al pastor, and banh mi ahogada. Even the more traditional Mexican options, such as the carnitas tacos and the shredded chicken taquitos, include bright Eastern touches like pickled daikon radish and carrots, yuzu poblano crema, and soy ginger slaw.
Address: 147 S. Water St., Henderson, NV 89015.
Hours of Operation: Chinitas Tapas & Sushi operates six days a week, Tuesday through Sunday. Tuesday–Thursday hours are noon–9 p.m., Friday–Saturday hours are 11 a.m.–10 p.m., and Sunday hours are 11 a.m.–8 p.m.
Contact: The restaurant is reachable by phone at 702-405-8215 as well as by email at [email protected].
Little Chapel on the Corner
The most obvious distinguishing feature of the Little Chapel on the Corner is that it specializes in marriage. According to owner Kyle Duthie, the chapel hosts over 150 weddings a year, with some couples coming from as far away as Australia for the honor.
The idea behind this establishment is to provide a cozy and memorable setting for matrimony without the exorbitant expenses of the traditional ceremony or the factory-like approach of Las Vegas. Both the eponymous chapel and its outdoor gazebo provide charming milieus for marital union, and couples have their choice of numerous wedding packages to set the perfect mood.
Address: 34 E. Basic Road, Henderson, NV 89015.
Hours of Operation: The Little Chapel on the Corner operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Contact: Interested parties can call 702-487-5566 or use the chapel’s contact page to schedule tours or inquire about availabilities.
